How do the contact cards work? by whiplash on 07-28-2009 at 07:00 PM

What I'd like to do is share my contact card with anyone and everyone.

I remember back in the day, a person would have to view my contact card and then request/click automatic updates and then I had to approve it, or something along those lines.

But I notice that option is not available anymore.  So how do you go about giving permission?

Is there a setting in my Space that I overlooked that will do this for me?

I'd like ANYONE to be able to see updates through my contact card.  New blogs, new pics, the whole nine yards.  How would I do this?

Many thanks and also sorry if I posted this in the wrong board.

I just spend an hour trying to let it work, and looking for the difference between two accounts which one of them have auto-updates and the other not.

It should be, for you:

Hoover over your display picture so that a smaal popup will appear.
In there you can click on "View your contact card"
In your own contact card click on "Share your contact info"
Now you're taken to an online page where you can enter the info and select who can see it.
Direct link to this page: http://profile.live.com/details/EditContact.aspx

The above is what _you_ need to do.

---

After that, your contacts need to 'subscribe' to (your) contact updates too though. However, after testing this several times in different ways I can't get this working either in Windows Live Messenger 2009.
Even not by enabling "Profile" and "Windows Live Messenger" in http://profile.live.com/whatsnewwithyousettings/ for the account I whish to share info with. And not by enabling everything on http://profile.live.com/WhatsNewSettings/ with the account I whish to view that info.
In Windows Live Messenger 2009, nor on the Live pages on the net, there doesn't seem to be an option anywhere to 'subscribe' to this kind of info anymore.  The only way I can get this working is using Windows Live Messenger 8.5.

So, atm this is a mystery for me too. I can't find a way to subscribe to someone's contact info without using Windows Live Messenger 8.5.

Thanks for the reply.  It is a bit strange, isn't it.  And then sharing my info would do just that, but not showing Space updates, such as blog entries and so on, which is primarily what I am looking for.

Well, lets see if it does require time to update and then move from there.

Edit: After re-reading your post, I see they still need to subscribe.  And if they need to do that, if I remember correctly I also need to manually approve it when they subscribe, unless that has changed.

I wish there were another way, not requiring subscriptions...

Well that's the same, you configure all that on the "updates about you" page: http://profile.live.com/whatsnewwithyousettings/
That's all you need to do...

And an overview of all the permissions is also here:

I've edited my previous post a bit. The issue isn't update time so it seems (with using WLM 8.5 it is instant), but the issue is how are your contacts suppose to 'subscribe' to these changes in the 'Edit Contact' panel. Note: I'm not talking about blogs and stuff, but simply about the info written in the 'Edit Contact' panel.

For blog entries and so on, this is done on this page:
http://profile.live.com/WhatsNewSettings/
So your contacts need to go to that page and enable the stuff they want to see. And that works sure enough, if something changes they would see it in the 'What's New' area in WLM...

But this doesn't change the settings about what they see in the 'Edit Contact' panel in Windows Live Messenger 2009. That panel isn't updated automatically with the info written in the profile. Only by using WLM 8.5 you can subscribe to this so it seems.

No, you don't get a "approve" popup anymore, but you approve by setting your Permissions here:
http://profile.live.com/Permissions/ > About you, etc...
(where you can also set it in such a way that only certain people can see those updates)

This is because since Windows Live Messenger 8.5 a hell of a lot other (online) content is added and integrated, way to much to list all in an "approve" popup. Hence the system was changed (but certainly not in a way it is still easy to keep track of everything, djeezus).

Note: people will always need to subscribe in one way or the other, that's  normal and a very good thing. It would be a big issue if people start getting updates from everybody and everything.

So, they need to select what they want to see. But unfortunatly, there is no option anymore to automatically fill in the 'edit contact' information in WLM 2009. But other stuff (blog updates, photos, etc) work though.

Well what I meant there was having updates on the contact card without subscribing.

Blogs and stuff will be visible there.

As long as you have enabled the proper content (profile.live.com/WhatsNewWithYouSettings/) you want to share and set the the proper permissions for that content (http://profile.live.com/Permissions/)...

...and that the contacts have selected the proper content to be visible (http://profile.live.com/WhatsNewSettings/) (=subscribing).

You can never force someone to see some content if they don't want to. That's the whole point of subscribing, no matter where it is shown.
