I like Microsoft Security Essentials, works for me and doesnt take up much resources, I dont even realise its there.

Ive used McAfee before and I liked them too, they seemed to work quite well, except scans took a while.

Ive also heard alot of great things about NOD32 and im sure alot of people on this forum can vouch for it.

Depends how much money you want to spend really, if you want somehting free, id recommend AVG Personal Edition.

McAfee is the best i think. Also i'm not just saying it because i use :P i have used everything else, and mcafee seems like the best.

I prefer not to have an AV... slows the computer down too much... but that is because I download of trusted sites and don't often visit the nasty ones...

I have used NOD32, it was quite good and stops a lot of communication from unknown programs. One of my friends has viruses and they were getting out of control with Norton but he was able to stop them with NOD32.

I have heard good things about McAfee... gets the most amount of viruses compared to any apparently.

Don't, what ever you do use Norton. It will slow down your laptop so much you will try and break it, plus it doesn't even get a lot of the viruses (especially the ones that go onto USB via the autorun.ini)

Just my 2 cents worth ;o

Paid I'd say NOD32.

If you're looking for something free, go with Microsoft's new Security Essentials. They have been getting good reviews.

Maybe, but McAfee is also known for big amounts of false positives, annoying its users more then it should.

I use AVG Free and have done problem free for a number of years

I would echo sentiments that Norton is horrible and to be avoided at all costs.  Also, having worked with McAfee I can recommend avoiding that too!

It's not as bad as you think. I was given a copy of 'Norton gaming edition' for free and I put it on my little brothers laptop and it works fine.

As nf said I don't use AV as I don't need it. I don't browse the internet looking for cracks and free porn.

Lolled at the conspiracy theory of anti virus makers creating viruses.

Sure they benefit from bringing stories to the media, but somehow I just don't think a reputable anti virus maker would want to take the risk getting caught producing/spreading spam, password stealers, money laundering schemes, child pron, etc, etc. And if they were really into that, why would they make anti virus products in the first place, it's easier making money illegally (just as long as you don't get caught).

I do agree on the common sense thing, but that's for far from everybody, and doesn't give you any guarantee either. I studied years of computer science and supposed to know a bunch of how the internet works by now, but if I download something from what I consider to be a trusted source there is nothing stopping me from getting myself infected if they got their security compromised at some point. And there will be nothing hinting me I'm now part of some botnet spamming around, distributing child pron, or whatever, unless I start monitoring my network traffic. Having a virus scanner doesn't give me any guarantee either, but at least it's the best I can do.

But it all depends on how much you care too. I don't run anti virus on any of my laptops, just on my desktop. The laptops aren't used that much to begin with and there isn't any interesting data on it. Desktop on the other hand is on almost 24/7, I do a lot of different things on (including checking the trojans script kiddies submit as a Plus! script :p), sensitive data, etc, etc.

But I would never say you can't get a virus if you know what you're doing, even if you don't visit any dodgy places and keep all your software up-to-date all the time. It will be far less likely, yes, but at some point you will download an executable from somewhere and unless you can read read code like in the matrix there is no way to tell if it does just what they promise it does... Let alone I can expect people like my parents to have any clue what's going on.

But at least we are all people who considered having a virus scanner or not. Whether we decided to run one, or go just on common sense is probably not even that important... we're already much more secure than all those people who have neither :),

+1

Let me just say this. People have their choices. Most AVs are good. I personally use ESET NOD32 and have had no issues with it. There was a long period of time when I used no antivirus at all and had absolutely no issues (if you know how to take care of your system, you should be fine).

Antiviruses, OS' and browsers are things which always cause e-wars because everyone has their own choices. Asking random people what their choices are isn't indicative of much unless you know the people answering in which case you can perform weighted analysis.

At the end of the day, its your choice. A choice that you have to make considering the resources you have at hand :)
