Hello. Since last friday, my Windows Live Messenger 2009 on Windows 7
Professional 32bit started to crash whenever I click on any contact on my
contact list in order to start a new conversation. I tried to uninstall and
reinstall Messenger and the whole Live Essentials platform with no success.

As you can see I omitted the computer name since it's my business laptop and
contains the full domain name too. However I don't think it's relevant to the
solution of the problem.

You could try a System Restore.

Otherwise, check which applications you've got running that could cause conflict.

Do you have any Messenger add-ons? Uninstall them all (SweetIM, SmileyCentral, MessengerDiscovery, etc.) as well as Messenger Plus! Live, just to be sure. Then restart Messenger and see if the problem still occurs.

If still no luck, run your computer in "Safe Mode (with networking)". Instructions here. Run WLM, see if the problem occurs. If it doesn't, it's most likely that an application is running when in normal Windows mode that is causing the problems, which you'll have to try and find.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried all of the above (except for the system restore, I don't have a restore point that goes so far -- my apologies, the first post was copy-and-pasted from the mail I sent to Microsoft Tech Support back in January 25, when the problem occured) plus creating a new account on the PC without any improvement.

Finally I solved the problem. The winner is... TortoiseCVS! It seems it hooks in the UI making WLM to crash. Should be fixed in TortoiseCVS 1.12.1 or later, according to this:
