Remove secure partition on pen drive by AngelDevil on 03-12-2010 at 03:08 PM

How can I remove o resize a partition in my usb pen? I have a Maxell 8gb pen drive with 2 partitions: a 'Secure' one (size: 1 mb), and a 'Data' one (8 gb). I want to remove o resize the Secure partition, but it is impossible... Someone who helps me?

There is a tool called Disk Management. Here are some links on how to use it.

Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000
Windows Vista/7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Manag...-recommended-links

I know well this tool, it allows to manage partitions in the same disk, but it recognizes 2 different disk for my pen drive..

if you don't want to see the 1mb partition, just use disk management to unmap the drive letter for it. depending on the flash drive, you may not be able to remove it.

That's exactly what those two partitions are: two different disks (USB sticks work in a slightly different way than normal HDDs).

Unmapping the drive letter will usually work if you just don't want to see the drive (although note that drive letters might change for USB sticks depending on what other stuff you have connected, etc), but the partition would physically still be there and you still wont be able to use that space on your stick for other stuff...

However, many USB sticks which come with a secure partition (eg: the ones from SandDisk are also one of those) usually come with a dedicated program to manage the partition and one of those functions are usually to remove the 'secure' partition and all its special programs (eg: for automatically syncing, starting stuff up, etc). If you don't have such a dedicated program for your particular USB stick, you can often find it by going to the company's website.

I just reformat whenever I get a memory stick or USB hard-drive, just to get rid of all the stuff that they bundle on it

disk management doesn't let you mess around with the partitions on usb drives for whatever reason, but diskpart.exe does (but it's command-line only.)

to start it, go to start and search "diskpart". once it finishes loading and the prompt ("DISKPART>") comes up, start off by doing "select volume x:\" (where x is the drive letter of the partition you're trying to manipulate) and then you can do things like "shrink", "delete", etc. do "help" for a list of commands, and "help [command]" for instructions on a specific command.
