Can't reinstall messenger by Grievous on 03-23-2010 at 05:25 PM
Hey everyone,
I hadn't realized the online but invisible bug was global, so I uninstalled WLM and now it won't reinstall. It just says it can't be installed. I've tried rebooting, but to no avail.
MSN is my main form of contacting coworkers etc, so this is kind of a major issue.

Could you give us the exact error message and code?
RE: Can't reinstall messenger by djdannyp on 03-23-2010 at 06:15 PM
Try using ZapMessenger to remove all traces of Windows Live Messenger, then re-download it from here and try to re-install
RE: Can't reinstall messenger by Grievous on 03-23-2010 at 08:03 PM
@Chris: It just said "couldn't install programs", and "please try again".
@Djdannyp: I'll try.
Oh, it also says "error: oncatalogresult: 0x8072ee6"
Next Steps: An unknown error occurred.

Grievous, disable your Anti-Virus or any security software and then try again. More specifically AVG
Any hope?
RE: Can't reinstall messenger by Grievous on 03-24-2010 at 05:36 PM
I don't have AVG, only McAfee and Maleware Bytes Anti Maleware.
Could McAfee be the problem? if so, how would I go about disabling it long enough to install WLM?
RE: Can't reinstall messenger by Grievous on 03-26-2010 at 04:25 AM
bump. I need this fixed asap.

Does Can't Install provide any insight for you?
RE: Can't reinstall messenger by Grievous on 03-26-2010 at 05:13 AM
Nagamasa, no. and I tried that program that sweeps all traces of WLM.
Here, got a screenshot.
RE: Can't reinstall messenger by Chris4 on 03-26-2010 at 07:43 PM
There may be a problem with Windows Installer.
Go to Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update. Make sure updates are turned on and click 'Check for updates'. It should say there's a Windows Installer update and possibly others. Install them, restart if required, then try.
If no luck, go to JK's blog here and manually install the products you want.

Irony is such a pain in my ass.
I got the messenger downloaded, but the first time I try to sign in, it says the service is temporarily unavailable.
I'll try later, Thanks Chris.
RE: Can't reinstall messenger by djdannyp on 03-27-2010 at 01:28 AM
Did it give a specific error code? Sometimes "Service temporarily unavailable" doesn't exactly mean that
RE: Can't reinstall messenger by Grievous on 03-27-2010 at 02:36 AM
The error code was 80040154.

I am, quite honestly starting to get furious with this damn messenger. That didn't fix it. Is there anything else we can try? If not, do you have an email address for the WLM staff so I can yell at them?

Yelling at them will get you no where.
Research the error number on this forum and Google, where you'll find many things you can try.

Chris,
I've tried everything I could find, nothing works. From what I could understand, a few people who have upgraded their Windows Live are experiencing this, and the only fix is to get an older version.
I thank you for all your help, but it seems as this is a fault on the Windows Live Team. Is there an email I can contact them on? I need to get my messenger working. There is only so much of Meebo I can put up with.

WLM 2009 has been out for a while and has been a required upgrade, so by 'upgraded' do you mean the leaked WLM 2010? If so, you're bound to get problems and you won't receive support for it.
The Windows Live team can only tell you what we're telling you here. I don't believe it's a bug in the program and I don't believe you've tried enough to fix it.
According to this removing AVG Ani-Virus and/or nVidia Forceware Access Manager can fix the problem, so if you have either you need to do so.
Also try:
- Remove WLM with ZapMessenger.
- Do a complete clean install.
If none of the above works, its most likely not Messenger's fault, but your computer. Could be conflicting software, etc.
RE: Can't reinstall messenger by Grievous on 03-28-2010 at 07:10 PM
I don't think I have the leaked version. I hope not, anyway.
I know it will help, but it doesn't make sense to remove an anti-virus software just for a messenger.
I've tried ZapMessenger.
What is confusing me is, before I removed WLM, I couldn't sign in at all, which turned out to be on a global-scale problem. Before that, everything was fine. Then I remove it, and try to install it again. Problems come back. How in the hell could that be?
I'm sorry to sound like a grump, but I've used this for how long, and now I have issues? If windows live would've put up a message saying they knew it was a global wide problem, I wouldn't of had a reason to remove it in the first place.
If nothing works, I am going to yell at windows live people. There is no problem on my end, I've made sure of it.

Ohh, thank you so much for this!
I have Windows 7 and firstly I had uninstalled MSN Live and then I just couldn't re-install it because the system thought it was already installed. This software cleared up the mess for the "80040154" error message for me!
PS: @grievous: if it's so urgent the need of MSN then just use some web-based MSN like meebo.com or try downgrading to something like MSN 8.5.
