Disabling Update Notifications by captainM on 10-22-2010 at 11:57 PM

I am using Messenger Plus! Live version 4.83, with the notification option disabled.

Recently (about 2 weeks ago), it has started notifying me of a new update.

Is this a bug?

And I think that each update is only supposed to be shown once, but mine is shown after restart, since I have DeepFreeze installed..

Deepfreeze is mostlikely indeed the culprint why the update notifications are shown again and again after each restart. And I have a hunch it might also be responsible for the notifications to show up in the first place (ignoring your setting).

In both cases it is possible that Deepfreeze resets your settings each time (by default that option you talk about is enabled). So, either configure Deepfreeze to allow registry changes by Messenger Plus!, or disable Deepfreeze until you have such an update notification again and then enable Deepfreeze again (so the registry changes by Plus! can be saved permanently).

It is also possible that the showing of the update notification itself, while you have that option disabled, is a bug in Plus! though. But on the other hand, I have never heared of, nor experienced, this 'bug' before, so I doubt a bit it is a real bug...

I will do as you recommended with DeepFreeze and report back.

Okay so I finally got the popup today (not really a pop-up, but w/e), and took a print-screen (attached).. it is located near the clock (win xp btw)..

clicking on it does not give me any option to update/ignore,etc.. it opens firefox and goes to this url:

http://www.msgpluslive.net/download/?PageAlert

so im not exactly sure how i'm supposed to 'ignore' this update..

As I said, if you have disabled the option to be notified of Plus! updates (see your first screenshot), you shouldn't have gotten that notification. So, something is blocking the setting of that option. DeepFreeze is quite a possibe candidate.

The option in question is stored here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Patchou\Messenger Plus! Live\<your windows live id>\Preferences\NotifyAutoUpdate

It is a DWORD. If set to 1 it will show notifications, if it is 0 it will not. And by default (if it doesn't exist) it equals 1.

So, after rebooting, check if that registry key is there and what value it has.

hmm thats odd. There must be some other keys associated with that.. I disabled deep freeze and checked the keys repeatedly, and they are 0.. hmm..

any other suggestions besides updating lol?

When you enable that option in Messenger Plus!, and then you check the registry for that NotifyAutoUpdate value, is it 0 or 1?

PS: no there are no other registry keys associated with it afaik.
