I'm led to believe this isn't a bug at all, but I'd still like to know how to disable it/fix it.
See how it shows his status/personal message twice?
What's up with that?

WLM is simply showing the last time the status was synched with the contacts live profile. No way to fix it however a workaround could be to limit the space in the header by dragging the separating bar upwards to hide that piece.
