Can't login or reset password for Plus! by joltCoder on 12-22-2011 at 06:52 PM

When i try to follow the "forgotten password" workflow at https://www.msgplus.net/SpecialPages/logon.aspx?returnurl=/?lang=en-US. I am presented with an "Unhandled exception" screen. I know my username and am unsure which of email addresses i used when i registered. Any help would be appreciated!

We are unable to replicate the problem that you are reporting. We have only one user in the database that match the nickname joltCoder it is associate to an email address at microsoft.com. I click on the Forgottent password link, enter the email address and click on send password. No exception everything seem to work fine, you should check your email at microsoft.com a new password has been sent to you.


Edit: Exception was replicate when using an email address that is not found in the user database.

My email address has changed and i no longer have access to old account... I've sent you a PM in the hopes that we can resolve as the issue is now just that my old mail account no longer exists.

I've located my logon information, but now it tells me that my account is locked.. Is it possible to unlock the account so i can login and update the profile?

To unlock an account use the forgot password function, this will a new password that will be send to you at the email address associated to the account. Unfortunately if you no longer have access to that email account there no way to recover  the Plus! account.

There should be some sort of escalation method. If Microsoft has one for account recovery so should Plus!. You guys have access to the database... Sunny has changed email addresses I do believe in the past.

Yes, I have access to the database, but there no way for me to know if that account belong to that guy.

If they can provide contacts that would have logs (since they are stored in plain text), the original email address.

Unfortunately that user doesn't have any log.

Serious time for a "secret question" kind of thing I think.
(and indeed a form to provide details only the owner will know - cellphone number, contacts, previous emails, names, whatever, etc, ... MS-style)

Questions like this will only increase in the future. Especially when the forums are going to be merged eventually.

I aggree, a secret question is a good idea. I'll log a new product backlog item in Team Foundation when I return to the office in Januaray. I can't promise when and if it will be implemented, because that up to the product owners.

Here is how I think it should work, we ask each users already register to pick a question and give the answer upon the next login after the update.The registration form need to be modify so that the new user are required to pick a question and set the answer. When a user click on the forgot password link the question is ask, if the user give the right answer he/she is allow to enter a new password.

Sill for users like joltCoder that forgot their password before the Q&A is in place nothing can be done.

sounds ok... But why wait after the update? This can be done now too, no (after it has been approved of course)?

Also, maybe the possebility to make your own question?

I created the  product backlog item No. 5552: Secret question for password recovery.

@Cookie: The system need to be modify in order to store the question and the answer associate to each user account in the database so that why it can't be done before the update. I added the ability for the user to create there own question in the PBI acceptance criteria.
