sorry if this is not where it should be but I really need some help. I need to be able to keep my chat history on msn but for some reason whenever I try to look at the history I keep getting the message windows can't open this file. I am then giving the option of checking online or using a programme already installed. I am not very pc literate so am at a loss as to where to start as I have never had to do this before. I have however noticed that my logs are not saving in xml if this helps. RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by Nathalie on 02-23-2012 at 03:29 PM What version of Messenger Plus! are you using and what version of Windows Live Messenger? RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by matty on 02-23-2012 at 04:37 PM Are they in a .PLE file format? If so then they are encrypted and you need Messenger Plus! to decrypt them. quote:If you get such a dialog it means that the file extension association for those specific file extensions has been removed (or corrupted). If the files have "PLE" as extension, then they are encrypted Messenger Plus! log files. And as Matty said, you need Messenger Plus! to open them. So, best thing you can do is to (re)install Messenger Plus!. After that you can open those files again by double clicking. If the files have another extension then please post back with the complete name of that file so that we can point you to the right direction you need to take. PS: Windows Live Messenger can only log chats in files with the extension "XML". So, if those files have anything else as an extension name, like you said, it means you're not logging with Windows Live Messenger (anymore). You can enable/disable this in Windows Live Messenger's options. Note: When you double click an XML file, it wont open in Windows Live Messenger directly because XML is a rather very general file type. It will probably open in your internet browser instead. Hi RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by matty on 02-23-2012 at 07:13 PM
If you open the file in notepad what do you see? RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by andream on 02-23-2012 at 07:19 PM
Hi Matty RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by matty on 02-23-2012 at 07:25 PM
quote:Post a screenshot of the file opened in notepad then. But please make sure to upload it to the server here not a file host. Thanks RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by matty on 02-23-2012 at 07:35 PM
This is a chat log from Windows Live Messenger not Messenger Plus!. RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by andream on 02-23-2012 at 07:41 PM
Sorry Matty RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by matty on 02-23-2012 at 07:45 PM Messenger Plus! logs are either a text based log, an html log or an encrypted log. Windows Live Messenger uses XML and that is what the above is. RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by andream on 02-23-2012 at 07:51 PM
so can you tell me why i am having trouble reading them and they don't diplay the same way as usual RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by matty on 02-23-2012 at 07:53 PM Either they lost their extension and Windows doesn't know how to open it or another program has altered the file association for XML files. RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by andream on 02-23-2012 at 07:55 PM Thank you. Could you possibly point me in the right direction for someone who would be able to enable me to fix/resolve theses issues RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by matty on 02-23-2012 at 07:58 PM Well if they still have their file extensions of XML then when you select the browser to open it you would check the bottom box that says to always use the following application to open the type of file. RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by andream on 02-23-2012 at 08:01 PM it doesn't work. they go to downloads and then don't display RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by matty on 02-23-2012 at 08:03 PM
Do you have Windows enabled to show the file extensions? RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by andream on 02-23-2012 at 08:09 PM
Hi RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by matty on 02-23-2012 at 08:13 PM Well if the files are missing their extensions then they are either being created without one and if that is the case you need to discuss it with Microsoft or something on your computer is removing them... RE: windows can't open this file - msn chat history by Nagamasa on 02-24-2012 at 12:33 AM Nah, it's a bug in the way Messenger saves convo history with emails that have a dot with it. Just rename the file to a *.xml file, in the same original directory (so that the XSLT Stylesheet can format it), and open it with your favourite browser. |
