I get 90% off the time that the (online) (only the online tag) in the main msn messenger contact window doesn't show.

I don't really get you ...how about giving us a screenshot?

He means the status (online) after a contact in the contact list doesn't always appear for him.
This tag will not be visible if you choose to group offline contacts; could this be what you did?

This is what the bug does, only not sorted on online/offline, but just groups, and it happens most off the time when I open my contact list
