(!N) = your contacts present msn display name.

You will see the smiley.

Hmmm, weird all I see is the colored keyboard shorcut, but no emoticon. Just in case I didn't express myself right. I meant emoticon on names on the contact list and in the sign in popup.

You will not see emoticons when you use (!N). Using (!N) requires that you have custom names enabled, and the limitation when it comes to emoticons (and the order of the list) apply as well then.
