I have 2 program's and when I start up one of them it says the port is in use by another program. I can't change the port on that program and I don't know what the other program is.

How do I find out which other program is using the port so I can delete/change it.

Start > Run > cmd > netstat

I'm not sure what you mean.

Could you please explain that a bit more? I got to the box that opens after I press run but I'm not sure what to do after that. Could you give some simpler instructions please.

actually, I've done it (somebody directed me in the right direction on msn but he's gone now) but when I type in the box the text doesn't come up and when I press netstat nothing happens.

'cmd' is the command you enter into the Run dialog, and 'netstat' is what you enter into the command window e.g.


'netstat' will then look for all TCP and UDP connections, and list them all, with their local port, remote port, and status. The numbers you want to look at are the ones immedaitely following the colons.
If you like, you can just paste the 'netstat' results here, along with the program that's complaining about not being able to open a port, and I'll have a look and tell you which program is getting in the way.

the black screen thing with the white writing just comes up blank with nout on and when I try typing on it, nothing shows up. I still tried pressing enter but nothing happened apart from 5 minutes later I hear the error sound and it's closed down.

Sounds like your command line's screwed. See if you can find an app on Google that does what netstat does.
