I have followed these instructions to change my name:

.........And when I press enter a error message comes up: ERROR: YOUR NAME COULD NOT BE CHANGED

I'm going crazy,

did you put a "space" (space bar) after the "/nick"
and all in a conversation?

also: do you have messenger plus! installed?
latest versions of both? just a few suggestions

I'm guessing he did have the space, and has Plus!, since the error is an MSN error saying the display name could not be changed. This will be either because it's too long, or the MSN servers are having issues.
