Whenever I sign in I see all contacts in the contact list without their corresponding image. Only when double clicking a contact and opening the conversation window will the display image refresh and show up. It seems that the MSN client by itself does not establish a connection with the contacts to receive their info, only when opening the convo window. IS there a fix for this?

No, since that's how it's meant to work. That way it doesn't rape your Internet bandwidth.

I wouldn't consider downloading a few thumbnails "bandwidth raping"....

Except it's not 'a few thumbnails'. It's potentially a couple of hundred full-size display pictures.
