On MSN Messenger you probably used Stuffplug. But now in Stuffplug 3 they've took that feature out because its not really reliable anymore. But there is a script which can tell you when a contact opens a conversation but it is unreliable. Script is called Convo notifier and search before posting.

It's called Live Notifier now, and it can be found here.

which will answer all questions regarding this and which provides links to all available notifiers. And shows that a simple search with "notifier" will list an extreme amount of already existing threads regarding this subject (which only still grows)...
