did you reinstall Plus after upgrading to 8.1? if not, try that

I just have Messenger Discovery Live 1.3 and also Plus! 4.23.

Well, some things improved and now working better...
Now I can see the coloured nicknames in the Contact List, but not in the popup window when someone signs in. There is still the code for the colours that he/she is using...

Uninstall Discovery Live and see if it fixes the issue, if not just re-install it, but i wouldnt be sure.

Windows Live Messenger truncates long nicknames in its own pop up toasts so the codes may appear if your contacts use BBcode style. Make sure that your contact has a short nick and less formatting on it (try it with one who have at most ten characters including the formatting codes) I recommend you to use MsgPlus!'s own sign-in notification toasts instead of WLM's, you won't encounter this problem with them.

Sounds interesting...where can I activate Plus!'s sign-in notification toasts?

From Messenger Plus! Live Preferences > Customize! > Event Notifications.
