Hi
i clicked on a link stupidly from a friend on msn and got a virus.
i updated my virus protection since and think i got rid of it but it has damaged windows a fair bit and deleted a fair few files from my computer like dll files and now my windows is running very bad.
it is doing things like closing my start menu bar when ever i try to open a folder and closing the folder so i cant even get into anything like my documents or my pictures or even control panel.
This seems to be the only thing wrong now.
I am using vista

Any idea how to fix this wud be much appriciated.

- See if you can go to Task Manager (Press Ctrl+Alt+Del) > Processes tab. See if there is anything unusual that you don't recognise. Search for it on Google and see if other people have reported it. If you can find which one is the virus, you can go into safe mode, search for it and delete it. If not...

- Run your computer in safe mode.

- Then run an anti-virus search (AVG Anti-Virus, Kaspersky, etc.) and a spyware search (Ad-Aware 2007, Spybot S&D, etc.).

- You could attempt to repair windows with your Windows CD.

Yeh i can get into the task manager everything seems ok though.
when i start windows i am getting loadsa error msgs reading:

"Error loading c:\users\lea\appdata\local\temp\qhhcjnj.dll
Specific module cannot be found"
&
"Error loading c:\users\lea\appdata\local\temp\qusuqokx.dll
Specific module cannot be found"
&
"Error loading c:\users\lea\appdata\local\temp\mlijkl.dll

Tried searching these on google but cant find anything.

They look like random files from a virus. Something seems to have deleted them, but left the registry keys attached to them still remain... If you are confident with RegEdit, I suggest manually searching for each one and removing them

Go to Start > Run > type msconfig and click OK.
See if there is anything unusual there.

Yeah go to msconfig in run, click the start up tab and disable all, none of your usual apps will come on after start up, but once you use them they will begin to load on start-up once again. Anything that you havn't set to come on on start up won't load again.

To Chris4 and Mentality (and maybe others): msconfig isn't the best tool to check startup entries. In fact, I would strongly suggest to never ever use msconfig to actually change startup stuff, it isn't even an 'easy alternative' for that.

Changes you make there will result in Windows starting up in an alternative state, meaning the changes will NOT be permanent and Windows will NOT start up in the normal way.

Furthermore, msconfig wont show you all the possible startup locations, there are tons and tons more. And especially virusses wont use the obvious entries which you would see in msconfig.

If you need to review and/or change startup entries, use a program like AutoRuns.
autoruns doesn't need installing and is completely free
