i have it disabled and it still pops up and am unable to get rid of it unless i completely sign out of messenger

can you tell us what kind of notification exactly you disabled? I tried to reproduce but with a "Status change" notification and disabling it worked as expected.

when i open up preferences i go to customize and to the events notifications i have nothing checked there i will try again and see if i have it fixed and will let you know

nope it popped up with notification alert and i can not close down the screen that pops up with it
