O.P. Question About Installing Messenger Live 9 64-bit (on Vista)
Hello,

I am trying to install Messenger Live 9 on my 64-bit Vista and I want to install the 64-bit version of it. I have followed all the download links for Messenger Live 64-bit but when I try to install them, they install as 32-bit programs. I know that because they install in Program Files (x86) and the Task Manager reports them as the 32-bit application.

The files I installed from were:

wlsetup.all

     .... and

wlsetup. custom

All were supposed to be the 64-bit versions of Messenger Live. Can anyone help me out with some info here? How come they install as 32-bit programs and not the 64 ones? Is there a link to the REAL 64-bit Messenger that would install properly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regardless of what you may think and whoever said it, msnmsgr.exe is 32bit. That's it...no 64bit, whever such 64bit is

Got 64bit Vista? Cool. You're going to be using 32bit WLM.

Why? Because the world is against you. And because we're not in some kind of galaxy where you need the extra boost from x64 to run WLM.

Ah, so the 64-bit version simply doesn't exist? That would explain what was happening. Thank you.

However, what's up with all these copies of Windows Live x64 installer that are downloadable from some gazillion places, including the Microsoft Live downloads page itself? Why are they advertising the software as 64-bit then? I realize it's Microsoft and they have done things crazier than that, but am I the only one thinking that this is confusing?

Well, it certainly runs on my 64 bit Vista, but it installs as a 32 bit program. I guess what they mean by "64-bit compatible" is the fact that it can run on a 64 bit machine. That's all I can guess :)

64 bit compatible doesn't mean anything other than that: it means it's compatible. Now if they had said "64 bit version" or "built for 64 bit" or something similar, then I would understand. Compatible just means it works, doesn't mean it was optimized for it ;).

Oh, but it does say "64-bit version". If you look at the downloads, it says just that. And that is why I initially thought that it would actually be what it says and was surprised to find it loading as a 32-bit application.

not sure where you're downloading from, only place i can see it say 64 bit version on the main download place is under System requirements

"Operating system: Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (32-bit edition only), Windows Vista (32-bit or 64-bit editions).......

In conclusion, Software with x64 Compatibility != x64 Software

x64 software = software is compiled with a 64 bit compiler for all the 64bit awesomeness (or unawesomness according to some :dodgy:)
x64 compatibility = x86 (32 bit software) which works on x64 OS'
