I have installed the Windows Live Messenger Version 2009 and it stated that my contact list would be transferred too.  I can't find it and anyone that is trying to message me I am not receiving their messages?  I do not have Smiley Central or anything like that, I just want my messenger to work!!!   


The Message I am getting on my Messenger screen is:

"Welcome To Messenger

You don't have anyone on your contact list yet.  Add a contact or add people you know from other instant messaging services and Social Network sites."

Do you have Messenger Plus! Live installed?

Does the problem persist if you remove Messenger Plus! Live?

You aren't the only person reporting this problem, it's most likely just due to the number of people being moved onto WLM 2009 now that the forced upgrade has taken place.

No I don't have the Messenger Plus I just upgraded to the 2009 version.  Do I need the Messenger Plus extention for it to show up?

Try this:

1. Sign out and exit Messenger.
2. Click Start (in XP, click Run), type the following command and click OK.

3. A new window will open. Double-click on the folder with your email address.
4. Double-click the Contacts folder.
5. Delete the two folders that are in the Contacts folder.
6. Open Messenger and sign in again.

No luck? Try this:

1. Sign out.
3. In the sign-in window, click "forget me".
4. Exit & restart messenger.
5. Try again.

Same problem here, there doesn't seem to be a solution yet.

Here a couple people fixed the problem by doing CTRL+ALT+DEL to open Task Manager, under Processes, go to msnmsgr.exe and click End Process. Re-run Messenger.

No, it's just that you posted in the Messenger Plus! Live extension area of the website, so I just wanted to check.

Have you tried completely uninstalling Windows Live Essentials (using ZapMessenger if it fails to uninstall correctly)  and then restarting your computer before trying to install again?

No I haven't tried uninstalling it yet, am hoping that I can find a better solution as I am on dial-up and it took FOREVER to upgrade!!! 

If you've downloaded the installer, then there's nothing more to download. You can simply uninstall Messenger, then install it using the one you downloaded.
