nope, not at this moment.
(although it might be a nice addition though.... the ability to re-open it without loosing data as long as one of the parties has it still open)
Like it currently works, photo sharing makes a 'special connection' between you and the contact. If either of you two disconnect from it, or cancel it, the data send between you two (the photo's and the cached thumbnails, etc) is removed. So, even if you would be able to reconnect at the moment, it would be a different photo stream than the previous one anyways.
