You need to click on the object you whish to select. If you want to select multiple objects then hold CTRL pressed while clicking on the objects
(this is btw normal overall windows beheviour, eg: in Windows Explorer you can select multiple files the same way)
Anyways, if you still find it annoying that the background is selected instead of the object (by accidentally clicking it), then add the "background" picture, but resize it to a minimum, and only when you're done editing your other objects, resize it back to its proper (fullscreen) state...
