I tried and couldn't see emoticons on any pop up (comes online, changes name, changes nick, goes offine), except for the window opened notifier of StuffPlug NG. That pop up doesn't show the custom name but the real display name.

My thought would be that you can't just change this for one part of Messenger, but have to enable a certain mode (e.g. sort by email) for Messenger as a whole.

Thanks for explaining these things to me. Just have to imagine emoticons instead of : P and : D. Any chance this will change in the future?

This limitation has been around for quite a long time now. I don't think it will be changed in a short time, sorry

okay, no problem it isn't your fault Thanks for clearing things up for me.

I was thinking about this the other day and...
Plus removes the formating tags from beeing shown in names without losing the emoticons, so would it be able to do the same for custom names?

Just noticed that the emoticons are shown when sending a file.
