I have a custom sound notification set up for my "close friends" group so I know when they come online.

When I sign out of MSN Messenger, then sign in again later (without rebooting), the sound generally doesn't play when my "close friends" come online.  (It does sometimes, which is really weird.)

I am using the latest version of MSN Messenger and Messenger Plus!, however, the problem has been occuring for some time - over a number of versions.

i think i have read about this problem before in another thread on this forum but i cant find the link to it at this time as soon as i find it ill put it here for you to read. ok i browsed through the forum and found the link to the thread im talking about which is [suggestion] Kill msn's auto sound-reset i hope this helps resolve your problem.

I've just noticed this bug is still occuring in 3.40.112.

And thanks to Stuart for your original reply.  I don't have a problem with the MSN Messenger sounds, it's the custom Messenger Plus sound that does not play after a sign out/in.

I just tried and it seems to work... note that Messenger Plus! does not detect an Messenger event within the next 20 seconds after you'Vesigned in. Would it be the problem you're talking about? if not, can you tell me what version of Messenger and Windows you're using?

i am also having the same problem
sometimes the custom sounds work and sometimes dont...
for me it is not related to signin or signout
i have been experiencing this problem over a last few versions (including msn 6.2 and the msg plus versions at that time ) dont remember exactly
right now i am using
MSN messenger beta 7.0425
Msg Plus Beta 3.40.112
Windows Xp SP1

The problem occured with Messenger 6.2 and Plus! 3.25 - and is now occuring with Messenger 7.0.0425 and Plus! 3.40.112.  I am using Windows XP (occurred with SP1 and now SP2).  It's not to do with the 20 seconds thing.

If for some reason I sign out of MSN Messenger, then sign in again later on (without rebooting), the custom sounds generally do not play for that particular session.  I will do some more testing to see if I can narrow it down any further.
