You are forgetting one thing...this doesnt work as msn does...When you make the :) emo in msn, the ddp gets all smiley and bla bla...
Now in forums, when you post and put the :D emo, it would change ur avatar in every place u had posted before, so where u posted :( would become :)...got it?

Solution :

User A posts :) in thread AA...So, in that post, in thread AA,his avatar remains :) Forever...1 minute later the same user A posts in thread AB, with the :( emo...so like in thread AA his avtar will be :( forever...

Now i dont think that'd be a good idea..phearps a field, bellow your Post count, Reputation, Age, Sex, Joining date and status, saying, POST MOOD = :D, :), or anything

I understand the problem Johny, but the mood avatar could just show the 'current mood'. And of course it could show an 'average mood' of for example the 5 latest posts.

It still wouldn't work decently.... Like I said, they way it is in MSN Messenger can not be copied to a forum, it will never work that way...

btw, and I can be in a very bad mood, while still posting a message with :) to someone in a friendly thread....

And also, reacting on emoticons only enlarges the urge of people to post message with a lot of useless emoticons...

what about a drop down box under each post which lets you choose from a list of moods.

Well, maybe the word 'mood' is wrong then, but it doesn't affect the idea.

There you made a point.
I realise the whole idea must be well-thought, but it's not the time for that now, I'm going to sleep :p

Cool, but it could be contraditory, if you posted something with ':)' and your mood was 'Angry' :P...

The best solution is cookies one :

It could be done much easier also, just an easy accessible setting somewhere (top bar?) where you can select your mood. And the mood would show somewhere in the box where your avatar is (not replacing the avatar).
