I would prefer to see the avatar resized rather than banning large sizes.

That's done for all uploaded (avatar.php) avatars. As for remote linked avatars, I don't really want to add PHP code to check those, since they're on un-trusted remote servers...

There is a JavaScript-based resizer for all avatars, but it's not 100% effective/reliable.
