You know the links you get when you've received a file? Well, when I click on the link, the file refuses to open. Why is this?

Is the file that they're sending you one of the ones that is deemed 'potentially dangerous' by MSN Messenger, if so, it will delete it when you try and press to open it. Therefore, not opening at all.

Try using Stuffplug, and turn off the file transfer blocking feature.

When you say the file refuses to open, does nothing happen when you click the link, or do you get a security warning?

Nothing happens when I click the link.

You don't have Who Sent It installed do you?  The Plus! plugin to move recieved files, as that causes that exact problem.

When you goto your recieved files folder, is the file in the path that Messenger says its in?

Yes. Yes it is.

Was that a yes to having Who Sent It, or a yes to the file being there?  Or both?

Argh forget it, we're getting nowhere with this.
