The event viewer sometimes logs that contacts have changed their name to "1" (although they haven't). Any idea why this is happening? (see attachment)

Well from day 1 of Messenger Plus! Live, there was this problem.

What version are you using?

I believe the problem started again shortly after the fixed version came out (presumably another protocol change), but it's going to be fixed (again) in the next public release of plus.
