About the survey
Online social environments are mediated communication systems that connect people and spaces. These environments allow people to interact, accrue and share public knowledge about each other. Popular online social environments include discussion boards or online community forums, social network systems such as Facebook or MySpace, instant messaging programs and online chat spaces, and massively multiplayer online games (MMOG) or metaverses like World of Warcraft or Second Life.
The purpose of this survey is to understand the scope of use of existing online social environments and how people present themselves and perceive others through the online representations that the environments provide or support.
