Seems I only get this problem when I am chatting with someone using Pidgin.
Sorry I cant help. But it is annoying as your own display name gets hijacked to theirs rather than the joke you want and they get a message.........xxxx is now appearing as yyyy etc so it gives the whole game away anyway
