I downloaded a number of sound packs and installed them, when I am in a conversation and click on the 'play sound' icon Messenger shuts down.
It is version 2009 14.0.8117.416 on windows XP SP3.
Any help would be appreciated.

Highly suggest reinstalling Windows Live Messenger and Messenger Plus!.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled live messenger and messenger plus and still cannot play sounds, when I click on the 'sounds' icon it shuts down messenger live.

Everything seems to be fine over here.

Email support@kimahrisoftware.com. They may be able to give you a debug version that can help them narrow down the issue.
