O.P. RE: Custom sound feature error report thread
I've had it accept some sounds and not others of the same file type, is this the thread for this issue?

Not really, but i'll answer you :)

If you mean you can record from some soundfiles and not from others that might be because of the filetype...recording from an mp3 should be fine.

From changelog 3.50.124 - 16/03/2005:
Messenger Plus! now uses dedicated sound libraries to read sound files: Libsndfile and Lame_enc. Thanks to these great pieces of work, Messenger Plus! does not have to rely on the various codecs installed on a computer anymore. The list of supported file types is now fixed and constant for everyone: AIFF, AU, IFF, MAT4, MAT5, MP1, MP2, MP3, PAF, PVF, SF, SND, SVX, VOC, W64, WAV (PCM, A/u-law, ADPCM, GSM). It is important to note that some of these formats come in various sub-formats and that not all of them are supported by Libsndfile and Lame_enc.

In this case it was AIF, and in the case of my ace ventura pet detective soundbites...it accepted one and not the rest.

Edit: I'm told msnplus has an export soundpack feature but I can't seem to find it. I've got the newest msn7 and plus that goes with it.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread
The one that worked had correct format the others are most likely in a subformat (wich is not supported by Libsndfile and Lame_enc).

making a soundpack:

- click the msn icon in main msn screen
- open soundlibrary
- add new sounds
- export existing sounds to create a new soundpack

or

- in a conversation window click the soundicon you see on the left in the type in field
- click add/edit/remove sounds
- add new sounds etc etc...as above

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread
Messenger Plus! isn't a sound converter utility. It supports already many formats to import some sounds to create a custom sound from it.

Exporting sounds is not what Plus! is made for. The only think you can create is a soundpack of your custom sounds to save them for later use (you can import the soundpack again later)

The custom sound feature is to play/send short sound snippets to your contacts (like you can send emoticons), nothing more. It isn't meant as a (illegal) sound sharing utility, nor as a sound converting program...

PS: all this should have been in its own thread

well, it'd be nice to export a wav sound someone has sent out individualy to play in anything, thats what I was wondering about. It'd be very dificult to pirate illegal files with a 12 second limit.

If you go to export sounds, choose change the save type as all files, and type in .wav at the end of your sound it works.

ermmm... what are you on about? There is no "export" feature at all (beside the soundpack saver)....

And changing a file extension DOES NOT change a filetype. If "it works" it means it should have worked before with the PROPER file extension.

Also, DO NOT change/alter/tamper with the custom sounds files! ESPECIALLY if you do not know what you're doing (and suggesting changing the extension to wav is clearly not knowing what you're doing if I may add) It will render them useless and even worse, you could be corrupting the whole database.

Search the forums ;)

The custom sounds from Messenger Plus! are special adapted MP3 files. They can be played in anything. But DO NOT open/play them directly from their directory, COPY THEM FIRST!...

Even simply opening them in some media players will corrupt the sounds!

see "CookieRevised's reply to 'how to export sounds to formats'"

You might want to check out the emoticons adders and related stuff on the download section of http://www.mess.be/. Also some threads on http://www.msnfanatic.com/ are about the (custom) emoticons (eg: here). Also there are tons of tools which will save your data of msn messenger, all you need is a simple google search (eg: MSN Backup).

And on this forum, start reading here:
