It appears as if Plus! does not record emoticons the are selected using the WLM emoticons panel.  This also has problems when scripts try using the Message variable as it does not have them either.  Even when you press ctrl+up for the recent messages it also does show them.  You can see in the linked pictures exactly what I mean.

BTW, take no notice of the example messages

This may be a result of WLM's AutoReplace emoticon feature. Where Plus! just adds the code, WLM adds the actual emoticon in a way Plus! isn't detecting.

That was the kind of thing that I thought, but I thought Patchou might be interested in trying to fix this and other scripters might be interested in knowing about this in case people say there is a bug in the script when in fact it is just this problem.

yep, that's a current limitation... I'll keep working on that one.
