I am SO lost.  All I want is the new version of msn and I played with it for HOURS yesterday and today as well and I got nothing.  It says, "oo you need to download the 8 verison" or whatever so I go to do that...and then when I try it's all, "ooo you can't download this cause there's not enough memory on your computer or the cabinet file is corrupted"...so I clean out my computer but it's STILL the same...and I have NO idea what a cabinet file is or how to fix it.  I can get the 3.whatever version of the windows plus but not the 4.whatever version.  Please, please someone help me!

A cabinet file is a form of archive, much like the more popular zip format. Cabinet files are used extensively by Microsoft installers.

And you should still be able to run messenger 7.5 if you're having issues with 8.

I know I can run 7.5 but when I go to download the windows messenger plus, it will only let me get the 3.1 or whatever it is instead of the 4.1 because I don't have 8...and it refuses to let me have 8 and I don't know why

Try deleting your cache, unistalling messenger and plus!, and re-downloading the file from ideas.live.com. Then, download MP!LIVE and see if that works.

One thing more you can do (that might solve it) before you do a fresh install:
Have you ever used/do you use SmileyCentral or SweetIM? If so, uninstall it. C:/Program Files/MSN Messenger (delete it if it is).

Answer the question (second quote) and delete everything if needed.. and do the fresh install and lets see if that works.

It either seems you are confusing some things, or either use the proper names of programs to avoid confussion.

So to make sure:

Messenger Plus! is not an instant message program.

MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger are instant messaging programs.

Messenger Plus! is an addon for MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger. It is not a standalone application. It needs MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger. It will only add some new features. So you still will be using and chatting with MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger.

For MSN Messenger 6.x, 7.x you need Messenger Plus! 3.

For Windows Live Messenger 8.x you need Messenger Plus! Live (which is version 4).

If you encounter any problem following those points, post back.

I keep doing everything right...I go to download the windows 8.0 version and when it comes to the installing it tells me I either don't have enough memory or my cabinet file is corrupted.  I have tried uninstalling windows, I have tried cleaning out my computer, I have tried messing with the cabinet file without having a clue as to what I was doing, I have restored my computer, did a disk clean up...I have run out of options completely.  I have a freak computer!

8.0 or 8.1? Try downloading the other version (whichever 8.x) that you didn't download.
