how do you know when its a new version of messenger, do you download it and then see?

Open Messenger then click HELP, than About then you will see the version

I always like to keep upto date with stuff. A 5Mb download makes no odds to me, tho if I was on dial-up I might be a bit miffed.

I don't think there is a way to find out the version without downloading it. Of course, there is always someone who downloads it before anyone you, so they will know what version it is, and you can read about it on the forums and one web pages I guess
