It was trying.  I got the "Shutdown in 60 seconds" message, but luckily I remembered the magical shutdown -a command.

I removed it a while ago once I stoped it blocking the anti-virus websites.  I would guess I got it in the thirty seconds I had to disable the firewall for something last night, but it's all fixed now...well, I hope it is.

I'm a few days late here (typical ), but for the next time you want to do this you can avoid the entire XP Activation part by making a copy of:
\windows\system32\wpa.dbl (and wpa.bak if you want)

After re-installing, just drop the file back into \system32 and reboot - XP should be all activated again without having to contact MS.

Why activate when you can wait a week and get someone to crack it

Actually, there's nothing dodgy about it. It's a known technique.
The file will only work on the same machine (and only if the hardware hasn't been significantly changed between installs) and you need to have activated it first.

Oddly though, for such an important file, it's apparently not protected by System Restore...
