I've come across a bit of a problem. How do I change the Japanese characters to entities? I'm using Dreamweaver, (a respectable html editor I think) but I can't find how to do it anywhere... help please :$

i've used http://www.editplus.com to do that. it's very user friendly and easy to use, but i don't know if it's compatible with japanese characters. but still worth of trying (Y)

Ok, got that one. How do I save the file so that all the Japanese characters are changed to code?

I tried changing ANSI to entities, but no changes...

This is what I did in Dreamweaver:

(The name of the buttons...etc may not be accurate as I'm using a Chinese one)

There is a screenshot attached, please click here.

1. Open a new html file.
2. Change the meta charset to iso-8859-1 first.
3. Click "split" button (between "source" and "design", on the left of the title of the html page). You'll see your working area split to: Upper the source code, down the actual visual stuff.
4. Type your Japanese characters in the visual stuff area.
5. You will see the converted corresponding &#xxxxx; codes in the source code area :)

It was a good suggestion, but the moment I change the page settings to iso-8859-1, it converts my Japanese characters to Ascii characters.

I don't understand why Japanese isn't compatible with .php though... I tested the page with the Japanese Shift-JIS settings and it works perfectly.

$LANG_charset="Shift_JIS";

I only have Internet Explorer, and am running on a Japanese computer, but I think it'd probably be the same for everyone.

Try this page, if you have any problems with it please let me know. Otherwise I think it should be good to go the way it is now.

It looks good in FireFox 0.9 (can't read Japanese though). Only in the titlebar it says "Messenger Plus! | XXXXXXXXXX". Those X's look like squares.
Finish the problem

The page loads fine. According to my Japanese Katakana knowledge, those Japanese characters seem to show correctly :)
