How do I change the programs that start automatically when the computer is turned on? The ones I mean are the programs that show icons in the bottom right corner with the clock.

I have done this before but I can't remember where the file is to change the settings.

Well most of the programs have an option mostly in the options menu where u can enable or disable if u want the software to start with windows or you can also edit the start up folder 

In windows 98/98SE/ME/XP:

Start > Run > Type "msconfig" (without the quotes)
Click on the start-up tab.

In 2000:

That's a bad method...

Although it "works", it will not be permanent. If you use msconfig to delete keys then Windows will create a temporary alternative bootsequence. You will allways start up with it then instead of the normal bootsequence (look at the General Tab after you've unselected an item, the selective-bootsequence will be choosen)....

Either use your regeditor directly (regedit.exe) or use a 3rd party application...

Furthermore, msconfig wont show you all the possible startup locations, there are many many more location in the registry.

The best program I've found and that will show ALL possible keys is called AutoRuns. It's free, small, very regulary updated, and you don't need to install it, only run it....

There is also another better known and very popular program called Startup Control Panel. But you not only need to install it into your configuration panel, it will not show all the possible keys either!! (It does show some more keys then msconfig though)...

Does AutoRuns give a description of the selected item?
Because i know a program (not freee) which tells you the description of the selected item.
The only reason i dont like it is because it says that Messenger Plus! has spyware

Autoruns doesn't depend on such dodgy stuff. Those databases used by such programs are often full of mistakes, forgotten, redundant or incomplete things... And are based on discriptions submitted by visitors of the main sites. Such programs are only good if you want to have a vague idea of what the file really is, but 90% of all existing files aren't even in those databases... If you wanna use such tools, then by all means use them, but take in account that there are often mistakes in their descriptions.

Besides, such things are out of the scope of Autoruns. Autoruns is for viewing every possible key that can hold programs that start up at Windows boot, it isn't a program to view comments/discriptions/etc that random people have given to a program....

Autoruns does give you a description of each file, but this description is taken from the file itself, from the file-properties, it doesn't need a database or anything.

Why don't you just try it out to know what it is? The program is only 1 file, you don't need to install anything, only run it, and it will not install anything on your computer either........

Here is a lovely program that shows start up processes. It's called Starter and it's by Codestuff. I like this program because it actually shows the icons of programs so you don't mistake a program for another.

Nice alternative, but again that doesn't show all the possible locations!!!

But,
Autoruns also shows the icons...
Autoruns doesn't need to be installed...
Autoruns is much smaller in size...
etc...
