i have noticed that when i now type in an emoticon or see one in somebody's display name, it doesnt show the icon, instead, it shows the text for it i.e : -)...and way to get it back to normal?

By Turning on the emoticons back..

Main MSN Window >> Tools >> Options >> Messages >> Show Emoticons in instant messages

That should do it!
