Can anyone tell me in layman's terms how I stop windows media player starting up everytime I turn my pc on.
Not sure why it started doing this in the first place - its being doing it for a few weeks now.
Its a nuisance as it wont let me do anything else until its been running a minute or two, and then it lets me close it.

This sounds veeeery strange. WMP should start up at all when you boot ur comp. You should try to check ur startup folder in the start menu of try start -> run -> msconfig -> then the last tab (which is called start up or something like that)
