I was wondering, when you write a screen name and put a smiley in it, it will come up as the number of keys needed to show the smiley. Is there a way that in your screen name you can change the 2-4 letter symbols for smileys into something equivelant to 1 letter?

Unless you use some dodgy unicode characters to make your font Wingdings, I think there's not.
