I'm not sure whether this happens all the time but it happened for me.
Not sure whether renaming contacts are to blame either but it's the only thing i've changed recently and i've had MsgPlus not running before and it's been fine.

I renamed some of my contacts.

When MsgPlus is not running on MSN Messenger (my version: 7) it does not show my contacts nicknames, it just shows their e-mail address.

When I run MsgPlus it's fine, and shows their nicknames.

This is intentional, msgPlus replace your contact's email address with custom names. If you are not running msgPlus, you can go to:
contacts->manage contacts->view contacts by->display name
to change back to their screen name

there also a bug which displays your contacts emails sometimes when custom names are enabled

After using a patch on MSN Messenger 7 to remove some things like the MSN Today button to test the app, Plus! sometimes doesn't show the custom name, just the email
