The "View by e-mail" thing annoys me because when you recieve an invitation, it displays the address, not either of the names.
Isn't it weird that "dyslexia" is hard to spell?

Well there is just another problem: when you enable custom names the icons/smileys on the nicks located in the contact list stop to show (there is no way to make the option "Manage Contacts -> View Contacts By -> Display Name" default, it ever stays on "E-Mail Address". :S

This is a limitation.

This is how the custom names feature works; it replaces the email address (which doesn't change, opposed to the display name) with your chosen custom name.

That is exactly what JunGe already said ;)

Anyways, as Calvin already explained (and Tochjo, right after he split this thread so my post was misplaced :XP::

The Custom Names feature will enable "View by email" in your contact list. Because of this emoticons will not be visible, the code will show instead. There is nothing you can do about as this is how Custom Names work, there is no other way. This is not a bug, but a limitation.

This is explained in the Preferences as well:

About the sorting of the contactlist:

It is MSN Messenger itself that sorts the list. If you choose "View by display name", then the list is sorted on the screen names from your contacts. If you choose "View by email" then the list is sorted on the emails.

Now, Messenger Plus! needs an unique identifier so it can change the contactperson's name to the custom name you've set. This is done by looking at their email address and this means that the contactlist needs to have "View by email" set and thus MSN Messenger sorts it on the emails, even if you see custom names...
