I just installled Openconvo, everything went smoothly. After configuring it the NIS firewall asked for permission to have openconvo.exe connect and I granted it. I assume that if I had the firewall block openconvo it would not work...so I guess I'm safe?

its not a bad program AFAIK....so your safe wether its blocked or not...just leave it unblocked, it shouldnt't do you no hamr or others would have reported it!
You should be safe. Most firewalls ask for you to unblock a program or let a program run just after you've installed it, so you are probably fine. OpenConvo is a safe program.
