im thinking of buying a 5.1 surround sound soundcar but im not sure about taking my old one out...

what im not sure on is will i have to do anything to make the headphones socket on the front of the pc work or would that be attaced to the motherboard or w.e. and work from that...

is there any other problems that may occur when changing sound cards?

is it onboard sound? if it is you wont remove it but from yuor post you make it sound like it is a proper sound card already in there but then usually there wouldnt be a headphone port on the front.

there's no problem changing soundcards, doesn't matter if it's an onboard soundcard. You're going to have 2 enabled soundcards and you just have to put one as the default one, also you should disable the other one from Windows or the BIOS.

well if its a seperate pci sound card then there is no probelm just remove it put in the new one and install the drivers for the new card and you can remove the old drivers at anytime. but if it is onboard which it sounds like it is but might not be then you need to make sure you do it in a specific order and your front headphone port wont work. you cant just set one as default you have to disable on board sound from the bios

Just Put it in your pc then do the following.
Start>Control Panel>Sounds Speech And Audio Devices>Adjust System Volume> At the <b>TOP</b> Were it gives the name of your sound card click the new one>Click apply

erm it has front headphone slots but i have to plug in a wire into the output. ( i have a audio jack splitter so i can attach speakers too....)

its a PCI card... so it should be simple yea?

Sure, that kind of stuff only fits in one way, don't make too much pressure.

yea, ive fitted a wirless network pci card and a tv tuner card so shouldn;t be different, i was just wondering about the jacks on the front of the pc and all that...

Sometimes these run through and back out of the computer in to your existing sockets but I doubt this is the case with these.

On recent motherboards (with onboard sound) and newer soundcards they have "header pins" in which a serries of leads connect to which provide the front port functionality.

Your best bet it is to open the case up and trace wher these wires run to.
