It is a good idea, a very good idea. You should always turn off system restore (and clear restore points) to remove a virus.

Safe mode = very good idea. I go into safe mode, and kill every process that task manager can
(I don't do it for virus removal, but ...). FYI; both of these should be done because it will unlock files to be scanned/cleaned/erased.
