I'm looking to take this up as a project, and I just want to make sure no-one else is working on it already.

Product Brief
Put simply, it'd take an image and make it lvback.gif.
Put more eloquently, it'd take a picture, give the user some, fewer or more options on how to convert it to a GIF, and overwrite any existing lvback.gif with the converted image. There could even be an option to backup the old image, for later restoration.

You should insert it in msnmsgr.exe with reshack so you can use a PNG...

I enquired about a program for this a while ago and was told it would work but would always requier a restart which I don't mind, I aint a programmer so I can't do it, I say go for it, and if you do keep me updated please.

Not possible - Messenger looks for a specific file in a specific location.

I'd rather stay away from writing patches and such, and so will continue with lvback.gif. Maybe someone with patching experience can do a PNG thing?

Also, the PNG method prevents you using animated pics AFAICT.

Well, so far I've got the hook working, so I should be able to add a functioning menu. I've also done the dialog (think Display Picture dialog), but I've still got the main work to do - the pictures themselves.
