You can invite your friends who aren't Gmail users to download Google Talk. They'll be sent an invitation to create a Gmail account at the same time. I am not sure about that, just did a test and no email has gotten to my account, but it sounds interesting. Is it only if you have invites to give or even if you don't? Who knows!  (rethorical question)

Go to https://www.google.com/accounts/UpdateUserInfo and change your name. Disconnect and re-connect. It should show up.

Yes, I did. You just put "Shawnz Pwnz" and you're done.
Edit: btw, I'm just talking about a temporary thing, until they put the ability to change nicks (if they do).
