RE: MSN doesn't wanna connect
Forwarding it to the ether never stopped me on IRC or FTP.
If I understand how IDENT works correctly, it's the method used by old Unix servers to check the identity of a machine. However, now there's SSL, there's no need to check identity, so IDENT has waned in use. Only old, non-SSL servers will use IDENT.

Ahem. SSL has nothing to do with Ident, nor does it replace it. It's not defunct or old either, its commonly used.

RE: MSN doesn't wanna connect
I know it has nothing to do with IDENT, but a secure connection is harder to crack.
EDIT: https://www.grc.com/port_113.htm
I've just reread that, and it explains that IDENT was used to automatically identify users of FTP and such. The problem was the almost complete lack of security, so no-one trusted it. Even now, servers that do use IDENT don't really care whether the connection is accepted or rejected, and stealthing it has never caused me any problems.
Suffice to say, IDENT isn't causing any problems with MSN Messenger.

RE: MSN doesn't wanna connect
Still, I stand by my claim that most servers don't force IDENT on you, whether it's in use or not. And we kinda got away from the original point of my first post in this thread, which was IDENT won't be stopping anyone getting onto MSN Messenger - AFAIK, the MSN servers don't use IDENT.

You can try bypassing a proxy server that was set in the MSN Messenger settings by letting MSN Messenger make a direct connection: click the Tools menu and choose Options... In the list to the left choose Connection. Click the Advanced Settings... button and untick all the checkboxes except the one labeled TCP. Restart MSN Messenger and see if you can connect this time.
there was no checkbox and the only thing written, in one of the the white boxes, was "1080"
