Does it reappear when you hovor your mouse at the bottom of the screen? If so you may well have set the option to auto-hide the taskbar. Right-click the taskbar if you can get it to appear and select 'properties' and change it back.

CHeck also that you haven't resized it down to zero rows, so that only a thin strip is displayed at the edge of your screen. If so, the thin strip is what to click and drag to resize it to however many rows you want. You can lock the taskbar so that you don't accidentally resize it.

thats what i mean, i didnt and i tried to resize it but it wouldnt go back and then i tried again later and it worked but now its only showing any toolbars like WMP. its quite weird. and when i reopen WMP and then minimize it into the taskbar thingy the taskbar resizes to the thin strip :S

i did an ad scan but it came up with nothing to do with this, havent dont a virus scan though, i very much doubt its a virus since i have protection and its only in my account

you've set WMP to be shown as a toolbar, thus when it is minimized you can still control it without switching aplliactaions
to stop:
right cllick toolbar>toolbars>"untick" the windoes media player
option (Y)
"You don't sleep, you defragment!"

err nobody seems to understand my problem, let me start again.

my task bar looks like it has been resized as a thin strip. i havent done this and i havent set it to auto-hide. when i try to pull the bar up it doesnt go up. when i use a program that minimizes into the task bar (like WMP) my task bar then shows up. but it does not show any other applications i am running.
screen shots are here:

Problem has been fixed.

A corrupted registry was to blame.
